Jose Guadalupe Posada: Legendary Printmaker of Mexico Exhibition
Catalina Island Museum exhibition open from Dec. 23, 2017 to April 8, 2018.
Mexican Art comes to Catalina Island for the first time in this exhibition celebrating Mexico’s most prolific artist. José Guadalupe Posada’s images captured all aspects of daily life in Mexico City from 1889-1913, directly influenced artist like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, shaped the Mexican identity and continue to inform contemporary image making today. A wide representation of Posada’s work, including his famous Day of the Dead calaveras and the artist’s original printing plates, make up this first-of-its-kind exhibition.
The exhibition will feature text in English and Spanish.

Jose Guadalupe Posada Makes the Top 7 List at the MALBA in Argentina
4. José Guadalupe Posada, La calavera catrina (1912)
Convertida años después en símbolo oficial de la celebración del Día de los Muertos -tradición azteca que se remonta a la época prehispánica-, La calavera catrina es una zincografía (impresión que reemplaza la piedra litográfica por la plancha de zinc) pintada por el artista José Guadalupe Posada en 1912. Una calavera con un distinguido sombrero de plumas es la imagen elegida para criticar de manera metafórica a la aristocracia mexicana, a las clases privilegiadas, antes de la revolución. "Catrina es algo así como un dandy, un snob, una figura típica de la modernidad, que quiere simular ser algo que no es", explica Victoria Giraudo. La metáfora de la muerte implica que "así como estás, te vas, no importa si seas rico o pobre", agrega la curadora mexicana Ariadna Patiño Guadarrama. Años después la imagen será tomada a modo de homenaje por Diego Rivera, como tema central de uno de sus murales más destacados, Sueño de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central. Finalmente, la catrina se incorpora al imaginario colectivo mexicano como una de las representaciones centrales del Día de los Muertos, cada 2 de noviembre, un festejo para recordar a los seres queridos que ya no están, con ofrendas, flores, velas y mucho color.
